Longboard Classic 2008 Press Release Posted Tuesday, August 26 2008 by cliodhna
Now in its 5th successful year, the West Coast Surf Club – one of Ireland's earliest and longest running surf clubs, having been established in 1970 - is delighted to announce the 2008 Long-board Classic which is set to take place in Lahinch, Co. Clare on the 13th and 14th September.
Started in 2003, the event – the only of its kind in Ireland – has become one of the most hotly anticipated competition in the Irish surfing calendar, attracting long-boarders from all over Ireland and is particularly resonant in the closing wake of this years Olympics in China as surfing is hotly tipped to feature in the next Olympics in 2012. Ireland holds it own on the world stage in terms of the quality of surf available and also given the standard of Irish surfers which is again among the best internationally.
2007 saw a record number of entrants, the overall winner being Garry Hall from Kerry with Ben Hanna from the West Coast Surf Club in 2nd place. 2008 is set to attract an even greater response: to the date the organizers – Cliodhna Fawl, Dave Flynn, Alan Black and David Collins have been overwhelmed with the level of applications to date.

Speaking in the run-up to the event, Cliodhna Fawl pointed to the popularity of the Long-Boarding Classic similarly attracting a record number of sponsors: "we've always been greatly impressed with the level of interest and support we've attracted since the inaugural event in 2003. However in addition to an equally enthusiastic level of support from local businesses, we're also delighted to announce that Sony are signed up as a sponsor for this year's Classic."
Adding, Cliodhna said "without our sponsors this event would not have become the success it is. Equally, the commitment and dedication of the organizers as well as the surfers participating, all combine in what is generally regarded as what events like this should be: fun, relaxed, well organized, properly resourced and above all, featuring some of the best long-boarding skills this country has to offer also there will be a fantastic display of Tandem Surfing."
It is anticipated subject to weather conditions and swell that 13th September will see the initial heats and quarter finals run off with the semi-final and finals being help over until 14th September. An experienced panel of judges are assisting in the event headed up by Pascal Devine in line with ISA standards; lunch will be provided for all competitors in O'Looneys, while the host venue this year will be the Cornerstone Pub - where things will kick off on the Friday night from 10pm with a trad session and dvd, then on Sat music by Jimmy Mac from 10pm..
