List of Concerns forwarded to MCD re surfing in Doughmore Posted Friday, June 29 2007 by cliodhna

Safety  is the main concern for all .

No alcohol taken to the competition site—alcohol and water is a very dangerous combination.

All rubbish to be cleared from the location

Camping should not be allowed on the site as if someone gets into difficulty in the water when the crowd is gone it could lead to drownings , due to the dangerous nature of this beach.

No fires should be allowed , this is a fragile environment and the grass could take a long time to recover from damage leaving the dunes very exposed to erosion.

Education leaflet to be issued to all who enter the site of the competition. An information booth/tent to be set up to inform people of the dangers of the beach and information on surfing.

All water safety issues to be addressed. Safety is not a real issue for experienced surfers.

Lifeguards will be needed as the crowds expected will probably have none or very little experience of the ocean. These lifeguards will be needed as long as the crowds are on site. The council do not provide any lifeguards on this beach as it is regarded as too dangerous for swimming.

Doughmore is a very dangerous beach for swimmers as currents can be very strong and very unpredictable.

Toilet facilities to be made available to avoid people wandering up sand dunes to find a place to follow natures course. These toilets should be cleared daily. The dune system is fragile and traffic across it to be kept to a minimum.

As this is not an ISA  sanctioned event their insurance will not cover it—public liability and event insurance to be sorted both for in the  water and foreshore.

Permission to hold the competition to be  organised with the council.

As the surf club wish to maintain their relationship with Doonbeg golf club all precautions to be taken to avoid people accessing the golf course.

As this date clashes with an ISA competition  there may be difficulties getting judges and a computer system for tabulation of scores.I have been told that there is a system available at a cost of approx 5,500 euro including setup from www.refreshjudging.com.

We are also depending on there being personnel from the club available to run this, this is not guaranteed at the moment. There will be need for judges, spotters ,tabulators, timekeepers and general helpers .There will be a large amount of work for a large number of people needed on the days of the event and leading up to it.

Public address to be available for the running of the competition.

Viewing area to be set up for judging

There may be other issues raised as the club members consider this.
