C-Skins once again held the West Coast Junior Championships in Lahinch. Competitors from around Ireland gathered in Lahinch where everyone enjoyed a surf in 2 foot clean waves on the Friday evening, with the hope it would still be there on the Saturday morning. THe competition started on Saturday morning with the registration of 46 entrants, waves were only 1 foot at most and it was decided to run off the longboard heats first, the first 4 out in heat 1 made some nice longobard manoevres, toes on the nose and switch footin, but the surf was dying and the second 4 hadn't enough power in the waves. We decided to postpone the other heats till 2.30pm to see if the waves would improve. But alas, the swell was gone, so we organised a paddle race for the kids, with the help of Lahinch Surf School we obtained 9 swell surfboards, so everyone would have the same size surfboards.
There was great excitment on the beach with everyone cheering for their mates, the ages of the competitors ranged from 9 - 18 years of age.
We had a prize giving for the winners in each category. The C-Skins team Mark & Drew presented the winners with their prizes
1st U14 - Aaron Reid
1st U16 - David Bannon
1st U18 - Fergal Smith
1st U18 Girls - Rebecca Piggot
1st Longboard/Bodyboard - Aidan Kelly
All the entrants received a bar of wax and some stickers.
Now the Irsih Surf Team have squad trining in Lahinch from Sunday till Tuesday where they will be trained by Coaches Tom HIckey, Peter Cook and Zoe Lally. The Irish Surf Team squad training taking place in Lahinch over the next few days is the last selection event for the Irish team to compete at the World Junior Championships taking place in California and the European Championships taking place in Portugal in October. Teams will be selected on a combination of contests and squad training comps held over the past year and should be announced over the coming weeks by the Irsh Surfing Association.
We would like to thank C-Skins for sponsoring the event, the Irish Surfing Association, Zoe Lally for all their help and members of the West OCast Surf LCub. We would also like to thank the Christian Surfers who provided tea & Soft drinks for all the entrants
